{"id":31631,"date":"2023-07-12T13:05:45","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T12:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/petscanner.com\/?p=31631"},"modified":"2023-07-12T13:05:45","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T12:05:45","slug":"australian-cat-lost-in-scotland-reunited-with-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/petscanner.com\/index.php\/2023\/07\/12\/australian-cat-lost-in-scotland-reunited-with-owners\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Cat Lost in Scotland Reunited With Owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/petscanner.com\/index.php\/registermicrochip\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cat chip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inserted can also be incredibly effective in getting lost pets returned to their owners, no matter how far they have strayed from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An extraordinary case of a cat being identified 9,000 miles from where it was chipped shows just what is possible, as an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.stv.tv\/west-central\/cat-found-9000-miles-from-australian-home-reunited-with-owners-in-erskine\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australian feline was reunited with its owners in Scotland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stray cat, called Melvin, had been turning up for food at a home in Renfrewshire since Christmas before being reported to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melvin was checked by a vet before being sent to the charity\u2019s rehoming centre in Glasgow, but checks showed he had been chipped. However, the chip was actually Australian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chief inspector Laura McIntyre said: \u201cAs you can imagine, the team were slightly confused when Melvin\u2019s details came back registered to an address in Australia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This still led to him eventually being traced, however. His owners, Scottish couple Matt and Jacqueline Dick, had adopted the cat while living Down Under.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 14 years in Australia, they moved back to Scotland with Melvin and their dog in 2022. However, just weeks after moving into their new home in Erskine, Melvin went missing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats Protection\u2019s advocacy and government relations officer for Scotland, Alice Palombo, commented: \u201cMelvin\u2019s story goes to show why microchipping is so important and we\u2019re thrilled that he has been reunited with his owners thanks to his chip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The charity\u2019s Scottish branch is calling for Scotland to follow England\u2019s lead in making cat chipping mandatory. The English law will<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cats.org.uk\/help-and-advice\/neutering-and-vaccinations\/microchipping-your-cat\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">come into effect next June<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and anyone not complying could be fined up to \u00a3500.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, England is ahead of the rest of the UK in this regard, with Cats Protection also calling for compulsory chipping to be introduced in Wales and Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having a cat chip inserted can also be incredibly effective in getting lost pets returned to their owners, no matter how far they have strayed from home.
