{"id":40799,"date":"2025-05-23T15:51:48","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T14:51:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/petscanner.com\/?p=40799"},"modified":"2025-06-03T15:56:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:56:37","slug":"why-updated-cat-chipping-can-help-recover-stolen-pets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/petscanner.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/23\/why-updated-cat-chipping-can-help-recover-stolen-pets\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Updated Cat Chipping Can Help Recover Stolen Pets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat chipping is now mandatory in most of the UK, which is good news for more reasons than just if your cat wanders off and doesn\u2019t return home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While sometimes this is a case of feline misadventure or even a case of mistaken identity as the animal ends up with owners who mistake it for their own cat, there are, sadly, instances when something more malevolent is going on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The alarm was recently sounded in the Welsh borders as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/cats-keep-disappearing-welsh-village-31645066\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a spate of cat disappearances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has occurred in the Garth Owen area of Newtown, Powys. There have been ten cases in the last year, mostly over the past few months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If cats are chipped, they can be traced, but of those that have been found, several have appeared quite some distance from Newtown, scattered across mid-Wales and neighbouring English counties like Shropshire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has led police to suspect these may not be coincidental disappearances, with the cats in question unlikely to have all wandered long distances. One owner has lost three cats, which has added to the suspicions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the police investigate the matter, such instances should act as an extra reminder not just to be legally compliant and <a href=\"https:\/\/petscanner.com\/index.php\/implanters\/\">have your cat chipped<\/a>, but to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">update the chip<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if circumstances change, such as if you move home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there is also the problem of what happens if a cat goes missing and you subsequently move, as you can no longer be directly traced to that address. In such cases, it makes sense to leave contact details with the new occupants in case your pet does turn up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the missing Newtown cats have indeed been stolen by organised criminals, they may not be the only ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-gb\/news\/offbeat\/jodie-marsh-claims-three-cats-were-stolen-from-her-essex-farm\/ar-AA1DZxzN?ocid=BingNewsVerp\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essex Live<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that former model Jodie Marsh, who now lives on a farm in the village of Lindsell, has claimed that she has had three cats stolen since moving there. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cat chipping is now mandatory in most of the UK, which is good news for more reasons than just if your cat wanders off and doesn\u2019t return home.
