Pet owners in the UK are being warned that dog food made by Dogs Choice UK could pose a health risk. The manufacturer has issued a recall of products due to fears they could contain salmonella.
The Mirror reports that salmonella can cause serious food poising in humans, and can include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned in the recall alert that there is also a risk to humans, due to direct or indecent handling of the pet food, or contact with the faeces of the animals
Salmonella can also affect animals, causing symptoms that include diarrhoea, but they may not show any signs of illness.
The recall affects three flavours of dog food made by Dogs Choice UK, and they can be returned to the shop from where they were bought for a full refund. Locations that sell the affected pet food will also post notices about the recall.
The items affected all have a best before date of 8 August 2022 and come in 500g sizes.

- Frozen Chicken Liver 500g, 080222+2, best before August 8, 2022
The FSA has also advised pet owners about how to handle raw pet food safely.
- Always clean utensils and food bowls after use, and wash your hands after touching any of these and the food itself, cleaning any surfaces too.
- The FSA says raw pet food should be stored separately from any food and especially foods that are ready to eat.
- Care should also be taken when defrosting to avoid cross-contamination of foods and surfaces, it said.
