Summer days can mean lovely, long dog walks, but it is also extremely important to take good care of your pet during periods of warm weather, as they can become ill if exposed to too much sunlight or heat.

It is, therefore, safer to keep them by your side as much as possible on those hot days, so there is no risk of them going missing when the temperatures are sky-high, or becoming dehydrated without you knowing about it.

Here are some things you can do to keep your dog safe on walks when the temperature soars:

Get your pet microchipped

Most dogs love exploring, so if you’re going on a new walk or they fancy jumping into a lake, they might suddenly find themselves in an unfamiliar place and not know how to get back to you.

While this is always frightening for both the dog and their owner, it is even more dangerous in sunny conditions, as they are at risk of overheating or becoming dehydrated. This can be fatal for canines, so it is essential they are brought back to their owners straightaway.

The best way to do this is by getting them chipped and then downloading a microchip scanner app, so you can track their movements and find them as quickly as possible.

Go outside when it is cooler

It is best to go for your dog walk when the temperature is lower, which means heading out in the early morning or late evening. This will reduce the risk of them overheating, particularly if you avoid running or cycling with them.

Avoid pavements

It is also sensible to avoid walking on pavements, as the ground can become extremely hot to touch. Therefore, they could risk burning their paws!
