Bonfire season is upon us, which can be difficult for dog or cat owners to navigate, as many animals are scared of fireworks.

The RSPCA revealed that over half of cats and 62 per cent of dogs get stressed during fireworks, which could be because their hearing is much more sensitive than humans’.

They can even become so frightened by the explosions that they try to run away, which is why it is essential pet owners make sure they help their dog or cat feel as safe and calm as possible, so they aren’t spooked into escaping on Bonfire Night.

The first thing you could do is bring them indoors before the evening and make sure all the doors, windows and cat flaps are securely shut, so they can’t bolt.

You should also close the curtains to muffle the sound of the explosions and to prevent them from seeing the fireworks. It is also a good idea to turn on the TV or radio, as the noise can disguise the loud bangs, which could scare them.

You might want to create a safe den for them, as this will make them feel comforted. Put their favourite toy or treat in the area and cover it with blankets to hide the fireworks and mask the sound.

If they do become stressed, make sure to comfort them as much as possible by offering them reassurance and lots of cuddles.

If your dog or cat has a history of panicking on Bonfire Night or this is their first one and you don’t know how they will react, it is a good idea to prepare in case they decide to escape. For instance, when you open the front door, secure your pet in a different room, so they don’t run off.

You should also consider walking your dog earlier in the day, so they don’t bolt if they hear any early fireworks displays.

Make sure to update their dog or cat microchip, so that their details are accurate. This means if they do get out, there is a much higher chance of them being reunited with you.
