The summer might feel like a great time to get outside with your dogs, but when the temperature soars, it can become very uncomfortable, and even dangerous, for your furry friends.
That is why they may try to run off to find shelter or cool down if you head out with them when it is particularly hot.
To avoid this, there are some steps to take so pups can stay comfortable and by your side:
Avoid peak sunshine hours
The hottest hours of the day are typically between 10am and 4pm, so walk your dog in the morning before the weather heats up or in the evening when it is starting to cool down.
Choose grassy areas
The Dogs Trust recommends checking if it is too hot outside by holding your hand on the tarmac for five seconds. If it is uncomfortable to do this, then it is best to postpone your walk until later when it is cooler outside.
Regardless of this, it is sensible to choose grassy areas over tarmac anyway, as the ground absorbs heat from the sunshine and can become extremely hot for their paws.
Give them shade and water during the day
While it is a good idea to choose a walk that is in shade and bring water with you, it is sensible to make sure they have shelter and stay hydrated throughout the rest of the day too.
This will keep them cool and stop them overheating or becoming dehydrated when they go outdoors.
By walking underneath trees or giving them regular shelter breaks, you will reduce the risk of them running off to find shade on their own.
However, it is always sensible to register a dog microchip just in case they do sprint off, as this will help you track them and be reunited with your little companion.
